What File Size Do You Need to Print a Digital Portrait?
One of the most common questions we receive after delivering a custom digital portrait is: will this file print well at the size I want? It's a great question, and the answer depends on a few simple factors. Here's everything you need to know about file size, resolution, and print quality.
Understanding Resolution: DPI Explained
Print quality is measured in DPI — dots per inch. This refers to how many individual dots of ink a printer places within each inch of the printed image. The higher the DPI, the sharper and more detailed the print.
For high-quality photo printing, the standard is 300 DPI. This is the resolution at which prints look crisp and detailed when viewed at normal distance. Some large-format prints (such as posters or canvas prints viewed from further away) can look excellent at 150 DPI.
What File Size Do You Need for Common Print Sizes?
Here's a rough guide to the pixel dimensions you need for common print sizes at 300 DPI:
- A5 (15 x 21cm) — approximately 1772 x 2480 pixels
- A4 (21 x 29.7cm) — approximately 2480 x 3508 pixels
- A3 (29.7 x 42cm) — approximately 3508 x 4961 pixels
- A2 (42 x 59.4cm) — approximately 4961 x 7016 pixels

JPEG vs PNG: Which Is Better for Printing?
Both JPEG and PNG files can produce excellent prints. JPEG is the most common format for photo printing and is accepted by virtually all print labs. PNG files are lossless, meaning they retain every detail without compression — which can be an advantage for very large prints. Either format will work well for standard print sizes.
What If My File Seems Small?
File size in megabytes (MB) doesn't always tell the whole story — what matters is the pixel dimensions. Open your file and check the image size in pixels (you can do this in any photo viewer or editing app). If you're unsure whether your file is large enough for the print size you want, get in touch and we'll advise.
Can You Upscale a File?
Modern AI upscaling tools (such as Topaz Gigapixel) can increase the resolution of an image with impressive results. If you want to print at a very large size and are concerned about resolution, this is worth exploring. However, it's always better to start with the highest resolution file possible.
