One of the questions we're asked most often is whether it's possible to create a single portrait using several different reference photos. The answer is yes — and in many cases, working from multiple photos actually produces a better result than relying on a single image. Here's how it works.

Why You Might Need Multiple Photos

There are several common reasons why customers want to use more than one photo:

• Multiple subjects — if you want a portrait featuring two or more pets, or a person and a pet, you may have separate photos of each.
• No single perfect photo — perhaps one photo has the right expression but poor lighting, while another has great lighting but the wrong angle.
• Combining features — you might want the pose from one photo and the expression from another.
• A pet who has passed away — older photos may be the only reference available, and combining several can help build a fuller picture.

How Does the Artist Use Multiple Photos?

A skilled portrait artist is experienced in working from multiple references. They'll study each photo carefully, identifying the best elements from each — the sharpest view of the eyes, the most characteristic expression, the clearest detail of the coat or markings — and combine these into a single, cohesive portrait.
